Do you know these facts about Sanibel Island?

1.  Over 60% of the island is a designated National Wildlife Preserve.  The public is welcome to tour J.N. Ding Darling refuge.

2.  Sanibel Island offers year round live theatre.

3.  The Sanibel Causeway was originally built in 1963 and updated in 2007.

4.  Sanibel was settled in 1884 and incorporated in 1974.

5.  No Fast Food joints are on the island, except for Dairy Queen, which was "grandfathered".

6.  The Sanibel Island Light House was established in 1884.

Here are the Beaches....

You came for the sand and shells, and you know it!  Sanibel has an east-west orientation.  Most islands are north-south orientation.  Because of the unique orientation, the island offers an abundance of shells.  Becareful not to collect any LIVE shells.  The beaches are clean and sandy.  To keep them that way, there are rules beach visitors must follow.  Pets on Sanibel Island must be leashed, and should be cleaned up after. However, no pets allowed on Captiva beaches! Do you want to enjoy a cold beer?  Alcoholic beverages are prohibited November through May.  Here are a list of beaches on Sanibel and Captiva.

The Causeway

 

You seen on your drive to Sanibel the crowds gathered enjoying swimming, fishing, windsurfing and picnicking. This beach is FREE, except you must pay the toll to access the bridge.  Restrooms are available.

The Lighthouse Beach and Fishing Pier

Visit the historic lighthouse, while you enjoy the beach! This beautiful facility is on the east end of the Island.  You must pay by the hour to park. Enjoy the fishing pier and a boardwalk nature trail.  From the causeway turn left on Periwinkle Way all the way to the end.

The Gulfside City Park

Perfectly located mid-island on Algiers Lane, smack in the middle of Sanibel. 

Tarpon Bay Beach

RV's can easily park at this beach.  Walk a short trail to the beautiful beach.  Drive to the south end of Tarpon Bay Rd. at West Gulf Drive, this beach is in the middle of the Island, as well.

Bowman's Beach

This Beach is my favorite!  There is something special about this beach.  It is a bit of a walk to the ocean, but well worth it!  The beach does offer barbeque grills and showers.  Take Sanibel-Captiva road to Bowmans Beach Rd.  Very close to Captiva! 

Bowman's Beach

Located on both the Sanibel and Captiva side of the Blind Pass Bridge, this beach is popular with shellers and fishermen. Signs warn against swimming because of the swift currents. Located on Sanibel-Captiva Rd. at Blind Pass Bridge. No restrooms on the Sanibel side.

Captiva Beach

Located at the end of Captiva Drive, be sure to use the restroom...because there is not one here!  Beautiful beach and well worth the inconvenience!
